Multidisciplinary ceramic, textile, and sculptural artworks based in Portland, Oregon
Ilana Taylor Studio Works
My work is predominated by coil-built midrange and atmospherically high-fired ceramics, creating forms that challenge categories of aesthetic and function and the division of pottery versus sculpture.
In pursuit of my MFA Credential, I am exploring reverent framing of lineage, remembrance, and the natural world. Lingering senses of religiosity are directed not onto any institution or deity but to my ancestry and the organic forms that surround us. Within this reflection of lineage, I process loss and grief by applying lastingness to temporal memories through materials that hold contradictory notions of detail and permanence. This act of recollection is grounded into the physical realm through bulbous, churning, and developing references to the mysticism of Hag stone forms.
Through previous undergraduate developments, I have explored aesthetic applications of negative space, symmetry, and shadow to create forms that carry a timeless sense of artifact. My earliest ceramic forms were informed by the transcendent quality I find in identifying as a Femme lesbian, translating the sensations of occupying a fat Queer body through bodacious curves and self-declarative text.
